Learn by Doing - Public Participation Program

 

Studio Underground's Learn by Doing is an artist-led workshop series founded on the belief that an artist's practice extends far beyond the exhibition space. Presented each January and July, the series creates opportunities for artists to share their process, ideas, and creative methodologies through in-person workshops that invite participation, dialogue, and experimentation.

 

Developed in partnership with museums, cultural institutions, publishers, nonprofits, and creative organizations, Learn by Doing is intentionally rooted in physical gathering. Each program is hosted within a unique venue, creating opportunities for artists and participants to connect through shared experience while responding to the context of the institution and community in which it takes place.

 

Positioned intentionally between the major seasons of the contemporary art calendar, Learn by Doing transforms quieter moments into opportunities for research, learning, and creative exchange. Inspired by the spirit of winter break and summer school, the series creates space for artists and participants to slow down, make together, ask questions, and engage with contemporary art through hands-on practice.

 

At its core, Learn by Doing is designed with two equal audiences in mind: the artist and the participant. For artists, the series expands creative practice beyond the studio, providing opportunities to develop as educators, facilitators, and cultural leaders. For participants, it offers direct access to contemporary artists and their methodologies, fostering curiosity, experimentation, and a deeper understanding of creative practice through shared making and conversation.

 

Studio Underground believes the strongest public programs are those that bring people together. By creating welcoming spaces where artists teach, participants explore, and institutions collaborate, Learn by Doing cultivates relationships that extend well beyond the workshop itself.
